Fall protection davit arms for General
Motors Bedford, Indiana Powertrain Plant. (Magazine article)
In late 2003 Michigan Safety Products was contacted by David Whipple, plant
engineer of the GM Bedford Powertrain Facility, to assist in design and supply
of a custom fall protection system for the plants 48 die cast machines.
After exhausting all other fall arrest options the davit arm concept became the
most appealing solution. With Mr. Whipple's concept drawings we approached
Unique Concepts Limited (UCL) to put this concept into reality. For
complete user safety, the davit arm would have to be able to rotate a full 360
degrees to allow workers fall protection around the entire machine. The
davits would also have to be lowered at times to accommodate an overhead crane.
This would be achieved with the addition of hydraulic cylinders to each davit.
For fall arrest, each davit is equipped with two 30' DBI/Sala Ultra Lok cable
retractable lifelines. The end result proved to be successful for both
worker safety and plant productivity.
